The Story: Drawn by whispers of color in the pre-dawn sky, I ventured to Caesar Creek State Park Marina, hoping sunrise would grace the horizon with brilliance. Beneath the Route 73 bridge, I picked my way across the riprap, seeking a line to lead the eye. The lake lay still, a mirror holding its breath. As light gathered, clouds blushed with fiery hues, mirrored perfectly on the water’s glassy surface. Only when the image flickered to life on my camera’s screen did I notice the serendipity—a luminous band of clouds aligned flawlessly with the bridge above. A fleeting gift of sky and symmetry, revealed only when I paused to look. The Rest of the Story: I call this art print a happy accident. I’ve always found it easier to chase sunsets than sunrises. During the day, you can monitor the cloud types forming over the Miami Valley and get into position well ahead of time. But at sunrise, the window is much shorter—once the cloud shapes and density reveal potential, you have maybe 20 minutes to act. It’s a quick flash-to-bang. That morning, sensing a hint of promise in the predawn sky, I grabbed my always-ready camera bag and dashed to Caesar Creek. I had an idea to use the State Route 73 bridge as a compositional anchor. By the time I arrived, those precious 20 minutes had passed, and the sky was already lighting up in wild colors. The parking lot slopes steeply toward the reservoir, and the Army Corps of Engineers had reinforced the hill with riprap—those foot-sized rocks that like to shift underfoot. As I clambered across them, adjusting my tripod left and right to line up the bridge as a leading line, I felt like a lumberjack walking on floating logs. The calm morning air had turned the lake into a perfect mirror. I was already admiring the vivid reflection when I snapped this frame—just to catch something before the colors faded in the strengthening light. At that moment, I hadn’t noticed the serendipitous alignment unfolding in front of me. Only when the image flashed across the back of my camera did I see it: a luminous ribbon of clouds, perfectly matching the shape and orientation of the bridge. I fired off a few more shots and even tried a panorama. They all turned out great—but this single frame, this happy accident, became my favorite.
