Sugarcreek Township Veterans Memorial During a Colorful Blue Hour No. 17

The Story:      Just weeks after its dedication, the Sugarcreek Veterans Memorial in Bellbrook, Ohio welcomed a new day beneath a sky filled with color. Located at the corner of Pine Court and Upper Bellbrook Road, the memorial stands as a tribute to those who have served, with flags representing each branch of the military surrounding the site. On this summer morning, textured stratocumulus clouds filled the sky, reflecting vivid tones of orange, pink, and purple. In the foreground, the American flag and service flags stood in quiet formation, while the bronze statue of local WWII veteran Jim “Pee Wee” Martin rose beneath the light… a steady presence honoring both his service and the sacrifices of his fellow soldiers.   The Rest of the Story The timing of this visit felt right. The memorial had only recently been completed, and the community was still taking it in.  When I saw the cloud cover building before sunrise, I knew there was a chance for something special. As the light developed, the sky took on that rare combination of texture and color that only lasts a few minutes.  I moved into position along the paver path, using it to guide the composition toward the flags and the statue.  Knowing that my wife and I also have a paver here added a personal connection to the moment.
