The Story: Minutes after sunrise at the Sugarcreek Veterans Memorial in Bellbrook, Ohio, the sky cleared to a deep blue as the last clouds faded away. From a slightly elevated perspective, the memorial grounds opened into view, with the paver path, flags, and central sculpture arranged in quiet balance. Using a tight aperture, the rising sun forms a crisp starburst overhead while warm light stretches across the grounds. Long shadows extend from the flags and monuments, and the bronze sculpture of Jim “Pee Wee” Martin faces into the morning light… a steady and purposeful presence within this newly dedicated space. The Rest of the Story The sky changed quickly after the first light. Within minutes, the textured clouds that filled the horizon gave way to clear blue, shifting the scene from color and atmosphere to clarity and form. To bring more structure into the composition, I raised the camera on a pole, just enough to reveal the layout of the memorial. From that height, the lines of the pathway and the spacing of the flags became more defined. The Sunstar added a focal point, but it was the light across the ground that held my attention… long shadows and warm tones giving the space a quiet sense of presence. In that moment, the memorial felt settled… no longer new, but already part of the landscape. Sublocation: Sugarcreek Veterans Memorial City, State: Sugarcreek Township, Ohio Year: 2025
