The Story: Within Sugarcreek MetroPark stand the Three Sisters—ancient white oaks that have watched centuries pass beneath their limbs. Park managers estimate this particular tree to be around 580 years old. On this serene summer morning, its towering branches reached 141 feet into the air, spreading nearly 93 feet wide. The sunlight filtered gently through its canopy, casting a soft, dappled light below—nature’s quiet cathedral on a perfect day. The Rest of the Story: This great white oak tree is impressively awe inspiring. Everytime I visit this tree, I’m taken back by this size and grandeur. On this summer day, Ohio wildflowers were blooming and this tree reached for the blue skies. For this shot, I reached for my Canon 11-24mm lens. Applying the Contre-jour technique of pointing my lens into the light, I find its 9-blade aperture creates some of the prettiest sunstars.
