The Story: After passing fields of golden soybeans glowing in the evening light, I figured the day’s work was done. Then I saw it—that tree. I had to turn around. In landscapes where most trees have long been cleared for planting, I’ve always wondered why a farmer leaves just one behind. These solitary trees feel like sentinels—standing watch through the seasons, weathering storms and silence, offering shade and a kind of quiet companionship to the land. On this peaceful evening, the sun still lingered in the western sky, and its warm light raked across the fields, catching every leaf and contour in a golden glow. The Rest of the Story: I’ve passed a lot of farm fields in Clinton County—some I stop for, many I don’t. But this tree pulled me in. Maybe it was the way it stood alone, or maybe it was the golden light of the setting sun that made the moment feel quiet and meaningful. I’ve learned these trees aren’t always accidents. Sometimes, they mark a family memory… or maybe the ground beneath is too rocky to till. Whatever the reason, they become landmarks in their own right. On this evening, I didn’t need to overthink it. I just stepped out, framed the shot, and let the light—and the tree—speak for themselves. I have more scenes from the local area under my Clinton County Ohio Art Prints.
