Golden Hour Over Poppy Field

The Story:      This vibrant poppy field rests beside the architecturally striking Speedway Corporate Headquarters near Enon, Ohio.  Once part of an expansive, arboretum-like landscape maintained by Speedway—a former subsidiary of Marathon Petroleum—the grounds featured a peaceful lake, walking paths, and quiet seating areas designed to offer employees a restorative connection to nature.  In 2021, Speedway was acquired by 7-Eleven, and since then, the once-reliable poppy plantings have become more sporadic. On this hazy summer evening in Clark County, after receiving permission to explore the private property, I captured the glowing poppies just as the sunset bathed them in warm, golden light—magnifying their rich crimson hues and evoking a sense of fleeting beauty. The Rest of the Story:  This poppy field was a favorite local spot for many years—filled not only with vivid red blooms but also scattered purple and pink wildflowers, stretching across a space the size of a football field.  I always asked permission to enter and respectfully stayed near the back edge, preserving the view for others to enjoy. That evening, moody clouds lingered in the western sky, casting a soft, hazy light over this cherished scene.  As the light began to fade, I turned my truck south toward home.  On that quiet drive, I stumbled across a golden wheat field glowing in the filtered sunset light—another fleeting gift, captured in this same series. Since then, the poppy field has changed ownership, and the wheat field hasn’t returned in quite the same way. But that evening remains a vivid memory—a moment when nature and timing aligned just right.
